Strategy this blog will follow to improve your vocab

This blog is going to follow a unique strategy to improve vocabulary of its readers. I have already explained the correct way of improving your vocabulary in the post: "Correct way to improve your vocabulary", and I am sad to see that most of the people do not use it - may be because they don't agree to it or because simply they don't know it! We are here to develop our vocabulary in a steady way which we can use for life.

The strategy is this blog will list a series of posts which will contain the difficult words with the sentences in which they appeared. The sentences will be those which I encounter in my daily random reading. The post will contain the sentence with highlighted difficult words. That will follow with the meaning of that word and also the context in which it should be used. When I say 'difficult word', it doesn't mean difficult to me, it means difficult to most of the people who have weak or intermediate level of vocabulary. If there are any other things we can learn from that sentence, like a new phrase, then these things will also be explained. By the time you complete reading the post you would have unknowlingly added some new words, new phrases in your vocabulary! Also you have understood its usage in English language and the probability of using the new words and new phrases in your day to day conversations increase significantly. It is important to revise the previous posts whenever you visit this blog so that you can go through the same words at least 2 to 3 times.

In this effort of creating a blog with unique methods to improve vocabulary, you can help me in many ways. You can comment the other usages you would like to suggest of the words we have covered and they will be published. If you have some sentences which you have encountered in your daily reading which you think have some difficult words, then you can send me these sentences through comments. These will be published with explaination of the difficult words and its usage.

Let us join hands to improve our vocabulary in an iconoclastic way.

Correct way to improve your vocabulary

Many people realize the importance of vocabulary when its too late. When you are appearing for an exam or an interview or some Group Discussion rounds where your command over English language will be tested - that is when you start preparing. People then adopt some techniques which are largely based on learning the new words by repeating it, till you remember it - may be a sentence which makes use of the word. This works in improving your knowledge about meaning of many words - but just for a short period of time!

This is because you tend to learn many words in less time - say like you want to learn 20-25 words in less than an hour. Many will think that 1 hour is okay to learn 20-25 words, whats big deal in it? But do you want to understand them properly and remember those words even after many years? Then many will realize that learning so many words and learning them forever in so little time is not that easy. When I say learning the words I mean understanding the exact usage of words. You not only should know the exact meaning of it, but also you should be able to make its use in day to day conversations - whenever you find perfect situations to use the new words. Are you still finding yourself to use same old words in daily conversations even you have learned many many new words through various vocabulary building books? If you can't use the new words, have you really increased your vocabulary? No.

So, if not this then what is the correct way of increasing vocabulary? The answer is reading exhaustively! Yes my dear, read and read..more and more...read exhaustively about diverse topics and domains. You will encounter words which you don't know, rush for a dictionary! Find it out! Google it! See different usages of that word, try to find out the situations in which the word is used. And then when your research is complete, you can say that you have learned a new word! Is this a hard way to learn? Yes it is! But this is a very guaranteed way to learn new words and learn them so nicely that you start using them in your daily conversations without any extra effort! And that is what our goal is - learning new words and using them in our daily conversations all through the rest of our life.

That's when I realized my Vocabulary sucks!!!

It was about 10pm, 2nd March 2009. I was reading a passage to practice my RC, as I was going to appear for a management exam, like CAT. I was trying to make RC my strong area from past 20 days. I read books on RC provided by two famous institutes for CAT, XAT, MAT and other MBA entrance exam preparations - Career Launcher and IMS. I found their material very very helpful for understanding some tips and tricks to handle RC questions. They answered many questions like which approach to have while reading the passage, and why reading speed above 400 words per minute is very helpful in RC...and other such things. But after studying all these things for 20 days....I later realised that even I know everything of these...I am unable to answer the questions...WHY???

I was trying to find answer for this question but was unable to...then when that night I was reading a passage....I met a many words which I had no idea about!!! THEN!!! EuREkAAA!!! I FOUND THE REASON!!!! I was not able to get my answers correct because I wasn't able to understand the passage!! BECauSE My VoCaBUlaRY SUckSSSSSZZZZZ!!!!

That's when I realised how important vocabulary is in cracking RC. I knew vocab isn't a thing which can be empowered in some weeks or months.....the journey of improving vocab is unending!! Wanna join...??
